  Pyrrolinone dyes, and photographic materials containing them, which dyes have the formula: ##STR1## wherein; E.sup.1 represents an electron withdrawing group; R.sup.1 represents an aryl group of 6 to 14 carbon atoms or an alkyl group of from 1 to 12 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 represents an alkyl or alkylthio group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or an alkenyl group of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, or an aryl, aralkyl, heterocyclic or cycloalkyl group any of which have 5 to 14 carbon atoms, or R2 represents a hydroxy, cyano, chloro, nitro or hydrogen; M.sup.+ is a cation; each L represents a methine group; m is 0, 1, 2, or 3; and D is a moiety in conjugation with the oxygen of the pyrollinone ring. The dyes are particularly useful as solid particle filter dye dispersions in photographic elements.
