The synthesis of a series of push–pull pyrimidine and quinoxaline chromophores with extended π-conjugated cores is reported. Starting from a bromoarylvinyldiazine derivative, the key step in the preparation of the chromophores consists of a Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction.
