    In situ IR and multinuclear NMR are used to monitor the formation of protonated diacetylketene tetrachloroaluminate (1) in the reaction of acetyl chloride and AlCl3 in both dichloromethane and in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl). The existence of a fast equilibrium between two enolic forms of protonated diacetylketene (with [AlCl4]− as the counterion) is established. The structure of 1 is determined by the rarely used 13C1H}–13C1H} COSY experiment.

    Novel ferroelectric liquid crystals exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase and liquid crystal compositions containing the same are provided, which liquid crystals are substituted biphenyl esters expressed by the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 * represents an optically active alkyl group of 4 to 18 carbon atoms; ##STR2## represents ##STR3## or ##STR4## Z represents R.sub.2, R.sub.2 CO or R.sub.2 COO wherein R.sub.2 represents an alkyl group or an alkoxy group each of 1 to 18 carbon atoms; and X and Y each represent hydrogen atom (H), bromine atom (Br), chlorine atom (Cl), fluorine atom (F) or cyano group (CN), and either one of X or Y is always hydrogen atom.

    In a method of making an organic electroluminescent device, a transfer layer is solution coated on a donor substrate. The transfer layer includes a polymerizable, amorphous matrix with a light emitting material disposed in the matrix. The transfer layer is then selectively patterned on a receptor. The polymerizable, amorphous matrix is then polymerized. Examples of patterning methods include laser thermal transfer or thermal head transfer. The method and associated materials can be used to form, for example, organic electroluminescent devices.
