Provided herein are methods of altering enantiomeric excess. The methods may include irradiating an atropisomer that includes at least one chiral substituent to alter the enantiomeric excess of the atropisomer. The at least one chiral substituent may be removed following irradiation.

Here we report a method for enantioenriching BINOL using a chiral auxiliary and an excitedstateproton transfer (ESPT) event. Regardless of the starting enantiomeric excess (ee), after irradiation the solution reaches a photostationary state whose ee is dependent solely on the identity of the chiral auxiliary group.
