    Antimony mercaptocarboxylic acid esters are provided having the formula: wherein: R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and alkylene linked with R2 in a ring having from three to about eight carbon atoms; R2 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, phenyl, and alkylene linked with R, in a ring having from three to about eight carbon atoms; R3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from one to three carbon atoms; R4 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, alkoxycarbonyl-alkylene and acyloxyalkylene having from three to about twenty carbon atoms, the alkylene having from two to about six carbon atoms; R5 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene and cycloalkylene having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and such groups having from one to four hydroxyl groups; Z is a bivalent alkylene group having from one to five carbon atoms and carrying the sulfur in a position alpha or beta to -OOC-; and n is a number from 1 to 3. A process for preparing such antimony compounds is also provided, as well as predecessor intermediates, and stabilizer compositions for polyvinyl chloride resin compositions comprising such antimony compounds, if desired with other polyvinyl chloride resin stabilizers.

    Novel improved polymer/polyisocyanate composition made by polymerizing acrylonitrile alone or with one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers in situ in a polyisocyanate. The polyisocyanate comprises a diarylalkylene diisocyanate; a polymeric diarylalkylene polyisocyanate; a quasi-prepolymer of a diarylalkylene diisocyanate or a polymeric diarylalkylene diisocyanate with an active hydrogen organic compound having at least two active hydrogen atoms per molecule; a mixture of a diarylalkylene diisocyanate, its carbodiimide and its trifunctional trimenc cycloadduct; or a mixture of two or more such polyisocyanates. to form a highly stable dispersion of small polymer particles in said polyisocyanate. The novel compositions are highly useful in the production of polyurethane products.

    Curable molding compositions comprising a mixture of: I. from about 25 to about 90 weight percent of a thermosetting resin containing: (a) from about 5 to about 95 weight percent of a polyester resin derived from the reaction of a poly(acrylate) and a vinyl monomer, said poly(acrylate) and vinyl monomer essentially free from functional groups reactive with the polyol of the polyisocyanate of (b); (b) from about 95 to about 5 weight percent of a polyurethane derived from the reaction of a saturated polyol and a polyisocyanate, said polyol and polyisocyanate free from unsaturated groups capable of copolymerizing with the poly(acrylate) or vinyl monomer of (a); and II. from about 75 to about 10 weight percent of one or more fibers with a melting point or a glass transition temperature above about 130°C; wherein (b) constitutes less than 40 weight percent of (I) and (II). These compositions are especially suited to produce thermoset fiber-reinforced molded articles by rapid injection molding techniques.

  • Flexible polyurethane foams having junction modifying particulate additives

    Conventional polyurethane foam products are modified by incorporating into the urethane reaction mixture a junction modifying particulate material that is selected with a critically controlled particle size relative to certain dimensional parameters of the foamed polymer matrix. This particulate material is selected with a particle size that results in location of the material in the foam cell wall junction regions rather than in the cell walls. The resulting products provided excellent physical properties (such as modulus of compression, tensile strength, elongation and tear resistance) at lower costs than normally encountered with similar unmodified foams. The preferred junction modifying particulate materials are organic polymeric materials such as ground rubber or plastics. As a result, the large particle size materials needed to achieve the junction modifying properties can be used without causing harmful abrasion or wear of processing equipment surfaces.

    Novel polymer/polyisocyanate compositions made by polymerizing at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer in situ in a blend of a first organic polyisocyanate and a stabilizer. The stabilizer comprises a polyoxyalkylene polyol having a number average molecular weight of at least 4000; an isocyanato terminated prepolymer formed by reacting the polyoxyalkylene polyol and a second organic polyisocyanate with the proviso that the isocyanato terminated prepolymer and the first organic polyisocyanate provide greater than 25 equivalents of isocyanato groups per equivalent of hydroxyl groups; a polymer/polyol formed using the polyoxyalkylene polyol; a polymer/prepolymer formed using the polyoxyalkylene polyol with the proviso indicated for the prepolymer above; or a modified polyol containing an ester group formed using the polyoxyalkylene polyol. The novel compositions provide highly stable dispersions of polymer particles in the first organic polyisocyanate and are highly useful in the production of polyurethane products.
