    Gradient index optical materials are formed by drop by drop dispensing of nanoparticle/monomer suspensions. Refractive index variations are defined by nanoparticle concentrations that can vary in three dimensions. Droplets of differing compositions can be mixed, and droplets or layers or droplets are partially cross-linked by exposure to ultraviolet radiation prior to dispensing additional droplets. Gradient index optical elements such as lenses, prisms, and waveguides can be formed in flexible polymer layers.

    Disclosed is an antibacterial agent composition which is highly safe and has excellent antibacterial abilities, by using a silicon-containing compound that is obtained by a specific manufacturing method. The antibacterial agent composition has a more stable antibacterial component, and is capable of imparting antibacterial abilities to teeth, while being also capable of cleaning an article or the mouth. Also disclosed are: an antiviral agent composition which is highly safe and has excellent virus deactivation abilities; an antibacterializing method, a cleaning/mouth rinsing method, each using the antibacterial agent composition or the antiviral agent composition; and a method for fixing an antibacterial agent or an antiviral agent. The antibacterial agent composition may contain a silicon-containing compound which is represented by general formula (1) and obtained by reacting a specific triethoxysilyl compound in an ethanol solvent.

    The invention comprises methods for decreasing colonization by a bacterium of a gut of a stink bug, the method comprising providing a composition comprising vanillin or an analog thereof; and delivering said composition to an egg from which the stink bug will hatch, whereby colonization by the bacterium within the gut of the stink bug hatched from the egg treated with the composition is decreased relative to a stink bug hatched from an untreated egg. In some embodiments, the decrease in colonization by the bacterium decreases the fitness of the stink bug, e.g., decreases reproductive ability, survival, rate of development, number of eggs, number of hatched eggs, adult emergence rate, body length, body width, body mass, or cuticle thickness. In some embodiments of the methods herein, the bacterial colonization-disrupting agent is an inhibitor of bacterial metabolism. In some embodiments, the bacterial colonization-disrupting agent is a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis inhibitor.
