Abstract13C NMR spectra of 39 thiophene and furan chalcone analogues in CDCl3 solutions are reported. The effect of substituents on the 13C chemical shifts in the phenyl and in the 5‐membered rings is discussed. 13C NMR shifts are correlated with Hammett parameters and with experimental shifts in the chalcone series.

A palladium-catalyzed Heck-type coupling method between arenes and ketone Mannich bases via C-N cleavage to synthesize chalcones is reported. This protocol offers good yields and tolerates a broad range of functional groups. Based on the extensive experimental data, we propose a plausible coulping mechanism.

Tolerant: By using Pd(OAc)2/PCy3 as a catalyst, both electron‐rich aromatic heterocycles and electron‐deficient fluorobenzenes undergo the dehydrogenative cross‐coupling with (hetero)aryl ethyl ketones in good yields. A broad range of functional groups is tolerated, thus providing a general method for the facile syntheses of chalcones or heterocyclic chalcone analogues. Furthermore, dialkyl ketones can also
