In our laboratory a precursor route to poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivatives is developed in which unsymmetricallysubstituted p-xylene derivatives, possessing a benzylic sulfinylalkyl group, are used as monomers. Because of this unsymmetry, we were forced to investigate thoroughly the synthesis of these sulfoxides, as we start from symmetric and readily accessible molecules, namely, bis(halomethyl)-p-xylene
The present invention relates to antifouling coatings capable of being switched by using heat or ultraviolet light. Prior to switching, the coating includes an onium cation component having antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Upon switching, the coating is converted to a conjugated polymer state, and the cationic component is released with any adsorbed biofilm layer. Thus, the coatings herein have switchable and releasable properties. Methods of making and using such coatings are also described.
IR and submillimetre-wave spectra of doped poly(p-phenylene vinylene)

Poly(p-phenylene vinylene)(PPV) films of varying thickness have been prepared using standard precursor routes. A new oxidative doping technique, using degassed concentrated H2SO4 under low pressure, was used. Precise levels of doping were achieved, these levels being dependent on the time of exposure and the thickness of the sample. A very wide range of spectral absorption measurements, covering the range 20–4000 cm–1, were carried out on doped and undoped samples and on the precursor polymer. Large variations in absorption peaks throughout the entire range were noticed upon doping. New assignments of the unknown IR peaks together with the observed peaks in the submillimetre range are proposed.

Bulk-heterojunction PPV (poly(p-phenylene vinylene))-CdSe submicron fibers have been prepared by introducing electrostatic interaction between thioglycolic acid capped CdSe nanocrystals and PPV precursor, subsequently with electrospinning and thermal conversion. The photoconductive device on a single PPV-CdSe fiber showed notable photoresponse, good response speed, wavelength-sensitivity, and reproducibility.
