-ethers with eight oxygen or sulfur atoms within the 24-menbered ring have been synthesized by using 1,2-benzenedithiol and 2-hydroxythiophenol as the starting materials. The complexation of Pd with dithia[24]crown-8-ether (DTC) and decomplexation by PPh3 addition led to reversible shuttling of the [2]rotaxane, which is composed of DTC and dialkylammonium whose shuttling behavior is different from that induced by N-acetylation of the ammonium moiety of the axle component causing irreversible structural change.

[2]Pseudorotaxane of dibenzylammonium and dithia[24]crown-8-ether (DTC) reacts with [PdCl2(cod)] (cod: 1,5-cyclooctadiene) to form [PdCl2(DTC)], accompanied by liberation of dibenzylammonium and cod. Further addition of PPh3 to the mixture causes formation of [PdCl2(PPh3)2] and regeneration of the [2]pseudorotaxane.
