    The invention comprises compounds, methods of making, and methods of using. The compounds may have a linear or cylic backbone and three or four appended functional groups: one or two lipohilic compounds including sterols or “fat soluble” vitamins, one or two hydrophilic polymer, and one or two carbohydrate. A group of polymer-carbohydrate conjugates having a central backbone and three appended functional groups are disclosed wherein one lipophilic compound is void of both steroid acids. The conjugate may have fatty acids as the primary lipophilic carrier, one hydrophilic polymer, and one carbohydrate. Specific functional groups may be selected for specific applications in formulating pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutriceuticals, and the like. Typical coupling reaction of the conjugates may involve one or more or combinations or in series of alkylation including N-alkylation or O-alkylation, etherification, esterification and amidation chemical processes. A variety of linkers between the backbone and functional groups may also be selected to modify the carriers or center backbones for the coupling reactions and optimize performance of the conjugates.

    Embodiments relate to methods of metal oxide nanocrystals preparation. In embodiments, a metal-organic precursor may be economically synthesized by reacting a metal with an organic acid. The organic acid may include an aliphatic chain longer than three carbon atoms. The metal may be In, Sn, Al, Ga, Zn, Cd, Sb, Bi, Ge, Mn, Ti, Nb, V, Cr, Mo, Fe, Y, Mg, Co, as well as mixtures thereof. Further processing of the metal-organic precursor (e.g. by pyrolysis, hydrolysis, or alcoholysis) produces metal oxide nanocrystals of desired characteristics. An metal-organic precursor of indium tin oxide (ITO) may be synthesized by reacting indium metal and tin metal with an organic acid having an aliphatic chain longer than three carbon atoms (e.g. stearic acid) at a temperature above 200° C. Further processing of the resulting metal-organic precursor yields ITO nanocrystals of regular shape, uniform size, and average diameter ranging of between about 1-500 nm.

    The invention provides new synthetic routes for cardiolipin with different fatty acids and/or alkyl chains with varying chain length and also with or without unsaturation. The reaction schemes can be used to generate new forms of cardiolipin, including cardiolipin variants. The cardiolipin prepared by the present methods can conveniently be incorporated into liposomes and other lipid formulations that can also include active agents such as hydrophobic or hydrophilic drugs. Such formulations can be used to treat diseases or in diagnostic and/or analytical assays. Liposomes also can include ligands, e.g., for targeting them to a cell type or specific tissue.
