A practical synthesis of enantiomerically pure (R)-desmethylsibutramine [(R)-DMS] and (S)-desmethylsibutramine [(S)-DMS] is outlined along with an improved synthesis of racemic desmethylsibutramine. This route was used for kilo-scale production of enantiomerically pure (R)- and (S)-DMS.
