    The present invention discloses a compound comprising a diphosphonate/phosphite of a tetravalent metal: M[(O.sub.3 P--R--PO.sub.3).sub.1-(x+y) (HPO.sub.3).sub.2X (O.sub.3 P--R--PO.sub.3 H.sub.2).sub.2y ] (where M, R, x and y have the meaning given in the description), in the form of a crystalline solid with an alpha-type lamellar structure with a distance between layers of 7.4 to 20.ANG. (depending on the dimensions of radical R), a BET surface area of 250 to 400m.sup.2 /g, and porosity within the mesopore range, with at least 50% of the pores measuring 20 to 30.ANG.. The compound, depending on the radical R used, may or may not have microporosity in the region between layers. Such a diphosphonate/phosphite of a tetravalent metal is obtained by reaction between diphosphonic acid, phosphorous acid and an oxyhalide of a tetravalent metal, in a solvent comprising dimethyl-sulphoxide/water containing hydrofluoric acid.

    Two new compounds (Co (2,2'-bipy)(H(2)dbP)](n) (1) and (2,2'-bipy)(2)(H(2)dbp)(H2O)]center dot H2O (2) based on the flexible ligand 4,4'-dimethylenebiphenyldiphosphonic acid (H(4)dbp) with 2,2'-bipyridine as secondary ligand have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Both the compounds are well characterized by routine elemental analysis, IR, electronic spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis and finally by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 1 is a 1D extended coordination polymer and 2 is a discrete molecular compound. A comparative study between the geometries of H(4)dbp ligand (in compounds 1 and 2, present study) and p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H(4)pxp) ligand (in previously reported compounds [Cu(2,2'-bipy)H(2)pxp)]center dot nH(2)O (1A) and Ni(2,2'-bipy)(2)H(4)pxp](n)H(2)pxp](n) (2A), see text) demonstrate the effect of the twisting in the benzene rings in changing higher dimensional H(x)dbp (x refers to number of protonated hydroxyl groups) compounds to lower dimensional Hxdbp compounds. The eight membered Co-dimer rings formed in compound 1 represents the simple and isolated Co-dimer, exhibiting weak antiferromagnetic exchange between metal centers through OPO bridges.     Three heterometallic 1-D polymers, [Ni(1,10-phen)(2)(H2O)}(2) (Mo5O15)(4,4'-dbp)} (.) (5.75H(2)O)] (4,4-dbp = O3PCH2C6H4C6 H4CH2PO3) (1), [Co(1,10-phen)(2)(H2O)}(2) (Mo5O15)(4,4'-dbp)} (.) (5.5H(2)O)] (2) and [Ni(2,2'-bpy)(3)} Ni(2,2'-bpy)(2)(H2O)} (Mo5O15)(4,4'-dbp)} (.) (4.75H(2)O)] (3), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The 1-D chains is constructed of [Mo5O15(4,4'-dbp)](4-) units, which are further decorated and charge compensated by [M(1,10-phen)(2)] (M = Ni, Co) or [Ni(2,2'-bpy)(2)] subunits.
