Sonogashira reactions of pentabromoiodobenzene and tetrabromo-1,4-diiodobenzene with various terminal alkynes at 20C in benzene resulted in selective replacement of the iodine atoms with formation of the corresponding alk-1-yn-1-yl-substituted polybromobenzenes.

The process also includes reacting the starting materials to form a tetrazine flame retardant. The article of manufacture includes a polymer and a flame-retardant compound having a tetrazine moiety and at least one ligand comprising a brominated moiety.
