A cage compound was synthesized in order to investigate the structure and cation-π interactions of the metal ion complex. The multi-step synthesis was achieved starting from trimesic acid triethyl ester. In solution, a completely symmetrical structure that was anticipated by the molecular design was observed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. However, in the solid state, X-ray crystallographic analysis

Multifunctional liquid phase carriers (LPCs) and methods of using LPCs for the preparation of biopolymers are provided. The LPCs are highly symmetrical compounds that possess more than two points of attachment for biopolymer synthesis. The LPCs have the formula Sp(X

)
n
, where Sp is a highly symmetrical moiety such that all X

groups are equivalent. X
1
is a functional group that is suitable for biopolymer synthesis, including OH, SH, NH

, COOH and the like. Biopolymers that may be produced using the methods provided include oligonucleotides, peptides, protein nucleic acids (PNAs) and oligosaccharides. Analogs of the biopolymers may also be prepared using the methods.

of the water-soluble ligand, 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA). These ligands were used to prepare mono-, bi- and trinuclear Rh(I) complexes whose catalytic activity, product selectivity and recyclability were evaluated in the aqueous biphasic hydroformylation of 1-octene.

Syntheses are described of 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzenes with the following substituents CH2Cl, CH2OEt, CH2OBz, and [CH2]2X (X = OH, OAc, OCBz, Cl, Br, CN, or CO2H), an improved route to 1,3,5-tris(hydroxymethyl)-benzene and alternative routes to the corresponding tri-aldehyde and tris(bromomethyl) derivative.
