Synthesis and cytostatical evaluation of cytidine- and adenosine-5′-hexadecylphosphate and their phosphonate analogs

Four phospholipid conjugates containing the non-cytotoxic nucleosides cytidine and adenosine were prepared by condensation reactions, and their cytotoxic activity was tested in vitro against the human immortalized mammary epithelial cell H184 A(1)N(4), the human mammary tumor cells MaTu and MCF7 and the B lymphoblast cell line Daudi. The synthesized compounds showed considerable activity towards H184 A(1)N(4), MaTu and Daudi cells, but they were not effective against MCF7 cells. The phosphorus moiety-either monophosphate or monophosphonate-does not influence the effectiveness of the phospholipid derivatives in the case of the solid tumor cell lines and H184 A(1)N(4). The leukemic Daudi cell line is strongly sensitive towards the different types of ester as well as to the type of the nucleoside component. Adenosine-5'-hexadecylphosphate proved to be the most potent compound among the substances prepared (IC50: 9.0 mu mol). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd.
Photochemical Electronic Doping of Colloidal CdSe Nanocrystals

A method for electronic doping of colloidal CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) is reported. Anaerobic photoexcitation of CdSe NCs in the presence of a borohydride hole quencher, Li[Et3BH], yields colloidal n-type CdSe NCs possessing extra conduction-band electrons compensated by cations deposited by the hydride hole quencher. The photodoped NCs possess excellent optical quality and display the key spectroscopic signatures associated with NC n-doping, including a bleach at the absorption edge, appearance of a new IR absorption band, and Auger quenching of the excitonic photoluminescence. Although stable under anaerobic conditions, these spectroscopic changes are all reversed completely upon exposure of the n-doped NCs to air. Chemical titration of the added electrons confirms previous correlations between absorption bleach and electron accumulation and provides a means of quantifying the extent of electron trapping in some NCs. The generality of this photodoping method is demonstrated by initial results on colloidal CdE (E = S, Te) NCs as well as on CdSe quantum dot films.

Bis(2-acenyl)acetylene compounds that are useful as organic semiconductors are disclosed. The compounds, when used as the active layer in OTFTs exhibit device characteristics, like charge-carrier mobilities and current on/off ratios, that are comparable to those of pentacene. Also described are semiconductor devices comprising at least one compound of the invention; and articles comprising the semiconductor devices such as thin film transistors or transistor arrays, and electroluminescent lamps.
