    Novel terphenyls having a relatively high clearing point and which are suitable for use in liquid crystal materials or in the preparation of compounds for use in such material are characterised by a formula: wherein: R, is selected from H, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy and alkoxycarbonyloxy; R2 is selected from H, alkyl, alkoxy; X, is selected from H and fluorine; X2 is selected from H and fluorine; and -R, is selected from provided that one of X, and X2 is fluorine.     A liquid crystal composition includes one or more of compounds represented by general formula (i) below and one or more of compounds represented by general formula (ii) below. In the formulae, R11a and R21a each independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms where one -CH2- or two or more non-adjacent -CH2- in the alkyl group may each independently be substituted with -CH=CH-, - C=C-, -O-, -CO-, -COO-, or -OCO-; one or more hydrogen atoms in the alkyl group may be substituted with a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom; X11a, X12a, X13a, X14a, and X21a each independently represent a hydrogen atom or a fluorine atom; A21a, A22a, and A23a each independently represent a trans-1, 4-cyclohexylene group or a 1,4-phenylene group whose hydrogen atom may be substituted with a fluorine atom or a chlorine atom.

    The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide: a liquid crystal composition suitable for a liquid crystal display element which hardly generates drop marks in production without worsening various characteristics thereof as liquid crystal display elements such as dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, nematic phase upper limit temperature, low-temperature nematic phase stability, γ1 and others, and also burn-in characteristics of display elements, and which realizes a stable discharge amount of a liquid crystal material in an ODF process, and to provide a liquid crystal display element using the composition. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition provided with photosensitizing properties as the entire composition where a polymerizable monomer is combined with specific liquid crystal compounds.

    The present invention relates to a nematic liquid crystal composition which is useful as a material used for liquid crystal display devices and which has a positive dielectric anisotropy (Δε), and the present invention further relates to a liquid crystal display device using such a nematic liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition of the present invention has a liquid crystal phase in a broad temperature range, a low viscosity, good resistance to resolution at low temperature, and high specific resistance and a voltage holding ratio and is stable to heat and light; hence, use of the liquid crystal composition contributes to production of a liquid crystal display device of, for example, an IPS type or a TN type in a good yield, the liquid crystal display device having good display quality and being less likely to suffer from defective display such as screen burn-in and stains of liquid crystal droplets. A liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal composition of the present invention enables both quick response and a reduction in defective display and is therefore practical; in particular, the liquid crystal composition is useful to active-matrix-driving liquid crystal display devices and can be applied to VA-mode, PSVA-mode, and TN-mode liquid crystal display devices.
