  quaternary pyrazinium salts as well as the protonated pyrazines undergo an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction under considerably milder conditions than the corresponding neutral pyrazines. The products of the reactions were []-annelated quaternary pyridinium salts and []-annelated protonated pyridinium cations, respectively.
