    The present invention is directed to a method for producing a copolymer and a copolymer product of the method. The copolymer is prepared by a controlled radical polymerization process, typically an atom transfer radical polymerization process, in which polymerizable alkene monomers are polymerized in the presence of a halogenated polyolefin macroinitiator. The copolymer product of this process is useful in a film-forming composition that adheres strongly to polyolefinic substrates and to which non-polyolefinic film-forming compositions strongly adhere. The copolymer can be applied to a substrate in an adhesion-promoting layer or can be incorporated into a film-forming composition, such as a primer, that contains additional resinous compounds.

    Coating formulations suitable for demanding applications such as automotive clear and top coats contain a hydroxyl-functional film forming resin, an isocyanate or blocked isocyanate curative, and functionalized metal oxide particles, where >50% of the reactive functionalities are more reactive towards isocyanates than at least 60% of the hydroxyl groups of the film forming resin. Coatings prepared therefrom have excellent abrasion resistance, even with low filler content.

    The present invention provides a powder composition for forming a heat stable wrinkle finish coating and the wrinkle finish coatings formed there from. The composition of the present invention comprises a resin consisting essentially of one or more than one silicone resin having a condensable hydroxyl content of from 2% by weight to 7% by weight, a curing agent, preferably an aminoplast, and a wrinkle finish forming catalyst, preferably an amine salt of triflic acid. In another embodiment, the powder composition of the present invention may comprise a hydroxyl functional resin, preferably a polyester, mixed with the said silicone resin to aid in the adhesion of the coating to a substrate. The composition of the present invention may further comprise up to 60 phr of a filler, such as wollastonite, to aid in heat stability. The coatings of the present invention provide outstanding heat stability at temperatures greater than 350°F and up to 550°F, preferably up to 650°F, for use on automobile or motorcycle exhaust systems, engine covers, manifolds, mufflers and engine parts, stoves, fireplaces, stovepipes, grilles, ovens, and barbecue equipment, boilers, kettles, furnaces, steam lines, heat exchangers and any surface routinely exposed to high heat for an extended time.

    A composition having sealing and sound dampening properties is disclosed which comprises one or more polyepoxides comprising at least two epoxide groups per molecule; a thermoplastic polyester polymer: a curing agent adapted to react with the polyepoxides; inorganic particles having an oil absorption value of less than 70; and inorganic microparticles different from the previously mentioned inorganic particles, the inorganic microparticles having an average particle size prior to incorporation into the composition ranging from 0.5 to 200 microns. Multilayer composites, coated substrates, and methods for forming sound dampening coatings on a metallic substrate are also provided.
