Synthesis of new aryl and hetaryl dibromides and diiodides, the monomers for preparation of polyarylene ethynylenes

Dibromides and diiodides with quinoxaline, phenylimidazole, and hexa- or pentaphenylarylene fragments were synthesized from dihalotolans obtained from chloral. Oligoarylene ethynylenes were synthesized by the reaction of the monomers with equimolar amounts of diethynyl aromatic compounds in the presence of the Pd-II complex. Oligomers with imidazole and hexa(penta)arylbenzene cycles are soluble in amide organic solvents and their reduced viscosities do not exceed 0.09 dL g(-1).

Solvent dependent competition between fluorescence resonance energy transfer and through bond energy transfer in rhodamine appended hexaphenylbenzene derivatives for sensing of Hg2+ ions
Hexaphenylbenzene (HPB) derivatives 5 and 7 having rhodamine B moieties have been designed and synthesized, and have been shown to display solvent dependent. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) and through bond energy transfer (TBET) in the presence of Hg2+ ions among the various cations (Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Ag+, Ba2+, Mg2+, K+, Na+, and Li+) have been tested. Derivative 5 displays quite high through bond energy transfer efficiency in the presence of Hg2+ ions in methanol whereas derivative 7 exhibits better FRET efficiency in the presence of Hg2+ ions in THF and CH3CN than derivative 5.

Synthetic alkylated graphenes of well chosen structure are prepared and used for mimicking indigenous asphaltenes. The mixtures can be used as multiphase flow test fluids in general and specifically in the Oil and gas industry.
Bundles of fibers of hexaphenylbenzene‐PEG derivatives in aqueous solutions are inferred from polarized and depolarized light scattering. The water uptake behavior and the self‐assembled structures can be controlled by changing the length of the PEG chains. With shorter PEG chains, the objects contain less water and the density of the self‐assembled structures is higher.
Dendritic and hyperbranched polyphenylenes via a simple Diels-Alder route

A Diels-Alder route to dendritic and hyperbranched polyphenylenes, based on hexa(penta)phenylbenzene units, is described. Using ethynyl-, propynyl- and phenylethynyl-substituted tetraphenylcyclopentadienones 1c−e, hyperbranched polymers with molecular weights Mw as high as 107,000 g mol−1 are obtained.
