A new amide synthesis strategy based on a fundamental mechanistic revision of the reaction of thioacids and organic azides is presented. The data demonstrate that amines are not formed as intermediates in this reaction. Alternative mechanisms proceeding through a thiatriazoline intermediate are suggested.
