    A rubber composition for golf balls includes (A) a base rubber, (B) two different metal salts of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids having 3 to 8 carbon atoms, (C) a metal salt in which at least one bonding site is a fatty acid of 9 or more carbon atoms, and (D) a crosslinking initiator. Letting component (B) include (B-1) an unsaturated metal carboxylate in a high compounding weight and (B-2) an unsaturated metal carboxylate in a low compounding weight, the ratio (B-2)/(B-1) is from 4 to 20 wt % and the ratio (B-2)/(C) is from 20 to 115 wt %. By using this rubber composition in a golf ball core, the golf ball can be endowed with both good spin properties and good durability on impact.

    A golf ball contains, as a structural element therein, a molded and crosslinked material obtained from a rubber composition which includes: (a) a base rubber (b) an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or a metal salt thereof, (c) a crosslinking initiator, and (d) a metal carboxylate in which the carboxylic acid bonded to metal is of two or more different types and at least one of the carboxylic acids has 8 or more carbon atoms. The rubber composition has an improved processability in kneading and other operations, and the decrease in the initial velocity of the ball core resulting from the inclusion of additives can be held to a minimum.

    In a multi-piece solid golf ball having a two-layer core with an inner core layer and an outer core layer, a cover, and at least one intermediate layer between the core and cover, the inner and outer core layers are formed of different rubber compositions, and the intermediate layer and the cover are formed of different resin compositions. The inner core layer diameter, the hardness relationship between the surface of the outer core layer and the center of the inner core layer, and the material hardness of the intermediate layer fall within specific ranges. Also, within the ball, the intermediate layer-encased sphere has a higher surface hardness than the cover-encased sphere. This golf ball has a larger spin rate-lowering effect on full shots with a driver, resulting in an increased distance, and also has an excellent spin performance on approach shots, thus providing the golfer with a competitive advantage.

    Rubber compositions having a particular rigidity booster and articles made therefrom. Such rubber compositions include a highly unsaturated diene rubber having a content of units of diene origin that is greater than 50 mol% and a reinforcing filler. Also included in such rubber compositions are a methylene acceptor and a methylene donor that form a methylene donor/methylene acceptor reinforcing resin system. The rubber compositions additionally include the rigidity booster that has structure (A) where R1 is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic moiety having a chain length of between C10 and C30 and Y is selected from the group consisting of— OM,— NH2, — NHR2,— N(R2R3) and combinations thereof, where M is a metallic cation and R2 and R3 are a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon having a chain length of between C1 and C25, wherein R1, R2 and R3 may be the same or different.
