An aromatic rearrangement of hydroxylamine derivatives that leads directly to ortho-sulfonyl anilines from simple starting materials is reported. This is achieved through formation of a new C−N bond with excellent levels of regiocontrol for the ortho isomer(s), which is proposed to be the result of attractive non-covalent interactions occurring during the C−N bond-forming step.

wherein R¹ and R³ are, identical or different, each a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, R² is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, or a phenyl-(lower)alkyl group which may have halogen atom or lower alkyl group on its phenyl ring, and R⁴ and R⁵ are, identical or different, each a lower alkoxy group.

[Solution]
The present invention provides a method for producing an aminophenylpyrimidinyl alcohol derivative represented by general formula (3), wherein R is an alkoxymethyl group, comprising reducing a carbonyl group of a nitrophenyl pyrimidinyl ketone derivative represented by general formula (1), wherein X is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, and R is the same as described above, to produce a nitrophenylpyrimidinyl alcohol derivative represented by general formula (2), wherein X and R are the same as described above, and then reducing the alcohol derivative. The present invention also provides the above nitrophenylpyrimidinyl alcohol derivative represented by formula (2).
