The present invention relates to a process for preparing 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomers having general formula (I) from a compound of general formula (II) and an active methylene compound of general formula (III) using a catalytic amount of an ammonium or iminium salt in homogeneous phase or supported on a solid substrate. Said process allows the direct synthesis of the monomers and finds application in the preparation of a wide variety of monomers. The products obtained are reactive monomers of high purity which find application in the field of fast curing adhesives.

Novel 4,4-diarylbutadiene-substituted methyltrialkylsilanes having the structural formula (1):
are useful sunscreens for UV-photoprotecting human skin against the damaging effects of UV-radiation, notably UV-A radiation.
A silicon-containing alpha-cyanoacrylate, useful as an adhesive, having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an alkylene group containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are each alkyl groups containing 1 to 6 carbon atoms, is disclosed. A process for preparing the silicon-containing alpha-cyanoacrylate compound is also set forth. In this process a cyanoacetate having the structural formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are as defined above, is dehydrocondensed with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst to produce a condensation polymer. The condensation polymer is thereupon depolymerized at elevated temperature to produce the silicon-containing alpha-cyanoacrylate.

A new and convenientpalladium-catalyzed carbonylative procedure of bromoacetonitrile has been developed. A variety of valuable 2-cyano-N-acetamide and 2-cyanoacetate compounds were obtained in good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, this transformation can be carried out under atmospheric pressure and provides an alternative route to 7 drug compounds.
