Cyanation of o-dichloroarenes with potassium hexacyanoferrate(ii) catalyzed by Pd(OAc)2/PPh3 system gave the corresponding phthalodinitriles in moderate yields. The method of competitive reactions revealed that activation rate of chloroarenes by Pd-catalyst increased in the presence of the electron-withdrawing groups in the arene core.
Provided are methods for preparing a phthalocyanine pigment in high yield that eliminate the need to add a heavy metal catalyst. The resulting pigmentary phthalocyanine products thus contain no or only trace amounts of heavy metal impurities. The provided methods produce phthalocyanine pigments that can be used in any application that utilizes phthalocyanine pigments, such as in dispersions, printing inks, paints, plastics and coatings.

A direct palladium-catalyzed C–H arylation method to synthesize biaryls from dicyanobenzenes has been developed. The reaction is selective towards C2-arylation of 1,3-dicyanobenzene and provides biaryls from both electron-rich and electron-poor aryl bromides containing para and metasubstituents.
