    A one pot method of preparing cyclic carbonyl compounds comprising an active pendant pentafluorophenyl carbonate group is disclosed. The cyclic carbonyl compounds can be polymerized by ring opening methods to form ROP polymers comprising repeat units comprising a side chain pentafluorophenyl carbonate group. Using a suitable nucleophile, the pendant pentafluorophenyl carbonate group can be selectively transformed into a variety of other functional groups before or after the ring opening polymerization.

    The invention relates to amino and hydroxy-functional polyesters, wherein the amine is in the form of aspartic acid esters functionality, and wherein the amino and hydroxy-functional polyester has (a) a molecular weight (Mn) of at least about 500, (b) an acid value of about 5 or less, (c) a hydroxyl value of about 30 or more, and (d) an amine value of about 30 or more, and (e) an amine functionality of less than 1.8. Preferably, the compound includes molecules having on the average: at least 1 secondary amino group as an aspartate, and/or at least 1 hydroxy group, and an average total functionality of about 1.8 or higher. More preferably, the molecular weight of the amino and hydroxy-functional polyesters is between 204 and 10,000 and preferably between 482 and 5000.

    The present invention relates to a process for simultaneously consecutive preparation of polyols by base-catalysed reaction of at least two different mid-chain aldehydes with formaldehyde. The simultaneous consecutive mode of operation makes it possible to achieve high conversions and high selectivities for both aldehydes, with additional achievement of a distinct reduction in the amount of unreacted formaldehyde remaining. This leads to improved process economics, since the energy costs for workup of the formaldehyde stream are distinctly reduced.
