The reaction of fumaryl halides with Lewis acids results in monoacyl cations and oxonium complexes. One C⋅⋅⋅O and three C⋅⋅⋅F contacts are formed for [C4H2FO2]+[Sb3F16]−. The monoacylium ion is stabilized by electron back-donation from its ligands to the positive ring-structured π-hole at the oxocarbenium center.
