Gold(III) halides catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides in a phase-transfer process. The organic sulfides, dissolved in nitromethane, are treated with (Bu4N+AuCl4−) in catalytic amount and aqueous nitric acid which acts as oxidant.
