The present invention is directed to a transition metal catalyst, comprising a Group 8 metal and a ligand having the structure
wherein R, R′ and R″ are organic groups having 1-15 carbon atoms, n=1-5, and m=0-4. The present invention is also directed to a method of forming a compound having an aromatic or vinylic carbon-oxygen, carbon-nitrogen, or carbon-carbon bond using the above catalyst. The catalyst and the method of using the catalyst are advantageous in preparation of compounds under mild conditions of approximately room temperature and pressure.

preparation of a new air-stablenickelphosphite based catalyst for unique C–N bond forming processes. Specifically, (BINAP)Ni[P(OPh)3]2, is presented as an effective catalyst for a range of amination reactions between aryl halides and primaryalkylamines. The results are supported by relevant kinetic studies, DFT calculations and a catalytic cycle indicating possible reaction intermediates.
Aryl chlorides are converted to aniline derivatives using catalytic amounts of Ni(COD)2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and DPPF (DPPF = 1,1‘-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene) or 1,10-phenanthroline in the presence of sodium tert-butoxide. This procedure has a broad substrate scope: electron-rich or electron-poor aryl chlorides, as well as chloropyridine derivatives, can be combined with primary and secondary

A general and simple nickel-catalyzed coupling of aryl chlorides and amines is reported. The scope and limitations of the coupling process using Ni(0), 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)dihydroimidazol-2-ylidene, and NaO-t-Bu as base were investigated. Secondary cyclic and acyclic amines and anilines provided the arylamine coupling products in good to excellent yields. Compared to palladium-catalyzed aminations, this procedure offers an alternative route to N-substituted anilines starting from readily available aryl chlorides.
