    A method for the preparation of an aqueous solution of iron polyprotic acid chelate complexes, comprising reacting a solution of a mixture of a first polyprotic acid or a salt thereof, said first acid being capable of chelating iron, and a second polyprotic acid or a salt thereof, said second acid being capable of chelating iron and being different from the first acid, with iron in the presence of an oxidizing agent, with the proviso that at least part of the carboxylic acid groups in the first and second acids is present in salt form and at least part of the carboxylic acid groups in the first and second acids is present in acid form. Preferably, the first and second polyprotic acids may be selected from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), N-hydroxyethyl-ethylenediaminetriacetic acid (HEDTA), and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), and the iron is selected from Fe-powder, Fe(OH)₂ and FeCO₃. Part of the polyprotic acid groups in the first and second acids is present in the salt form, the salt being selected from ammonium and alkali metal ions, in particular K⁺, Na⁺ and mixtures thereof. The method makes it possible to obtain aqueous solutions containing high contents of iron, such as up to approximately 7% by weight of iron, for use as a plant nutrient, mainly in soil-free plant culturing.

    A series of bifunctional chelates containing a tridentate donor set for complexation of the M(CO)3+ core and a maleimide group for site-specific coupling to peptides and proteins containing free thiol groups has been prepared and their Re(CO)3+ complexes and glutathione conjugates structurally characterized. The flexibility of design allows preparation of ligands suitable for both fluorescence imaging, radioimaging and radiotherapeutic studies of proteins and peptides as well as other biopolymers using site specific conjugation.

    Since the majority of conventional organic/inorganic composite materials are obtained by mechanical blending of a silsesquioxane and an organic polymer or other means, it was extremely difficult to control the structure of the composite as a molecular agglomerate. In order to solve such a problem, the invention is to provide a silicon compound represented by Formula (1). This novel silicon compound has a living radical polymerization initiating ability for addition polymerizable monomers of a wide range. In Formula (1), R1 is hydrogen, an alkyl, an aryl, or an arylalkyl; R2 is an alkyl, phenyl, or cyclohexyl; and A is a group having a polymerization initiating ability for addition polymerizable monomers.
