cis,cis,cis-1,2,3,4-Tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)cyclopentane/[PdCl(C3H5)]2 system efficiently catalyses the Heck reaction of arylhalides with styrene and vinylether derivatives. High turnover numbers can be obtained for the reaction of several arylhalides with styrene and styrene derivatives. Lower turnover numbers have been observed in the presence of vinylethers.

Mechanistic studies concerning the use of 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives as palladium ligands in the Heck reaction are described. The work is focused on the steering factors for the coordination of unsaturated systems onto palladium(0) and palladium(II) complexes.
