Electrically conductive compositions particularly useful for biomedical electrodes wherein the conductive composition comprises the physical and electrical interface between the electrode and the skin of a subject. The conductive composition is conformable, flexible, adhesive and forms a cohesive body (12) readily adaptable to use at the interface area of the electrode (10). The compositions comprise in interpenetrating polymer network consisting essentially of a hydrophyllic crosslinked polymer formed from a water soluble monomer and a hydrophyllic, polymer which is not crosslinked, a humectant, and water.

A novel process for preparing amidoalkanesulfonic acids represented by formula (3) and their derivatives by reacting a nitrile compound (1) with p-hydroxyalkanesulfonic acid or its derivative (2) in conc. sulfuric acid. Of the compounds of the formula (3) and their derivatives, unsaturated amidophenyl- substitued alkanesulfonic acids represented by formula (4) and their derivatives, particularly, 2-acrylamido-2-phenylpropanesulfonic acid and its derivatives are copolymerized with other monomers to provide useful materials such as copolymer-coated solid substances, copolymer emulsions, and pigment-dispersing agent.

@ A new and improved composition and method for profile modification of subterranean formations characterized by high reservoir temperatures and/or harsh brine conditions are disclosed. The new and improved profile modification agents comprise a gelable composition comprising:
(a) water;
(b) a water-thickening and crosslinkable amount of a water-dispersible copolymer comprising from about 30 to about 99 mol % of units derived from at least one N-sulfohydrocarbon substituted acrylamide monomer copolymerized with from about 1 to about 70 mol % of units derived from at least one other monomer bearing a carboxyl group or a carboxyl precursor group; and
(c) an amount of a polyvalent metal sufficient to crosslink the copolymer to form a stable gel. The profile modification agents are effective to alter the permeability of preselected portions of an underground formation by forming strong gels which are stable in harsh brine at temperatures of up to about 120°C. The composition and method are particularly adapted for use in enhanced oil recovery operations.
