    The present invention provides A method for producing a hydroxybenzoic acid compound comprising, preparing an alkali metal salt of a phenol compound from the phenol compound, and reacting the alkali metal salt of the phenol compound with carbon dioxide, wherein the step of preparing the alkali metal salt of the phenol compound from the phenol compound comprises the steps of: a) reacting an alkali metal alkoxide with an excess amount of the phenol compound, which is in excess of the alkali metal alkoxide, to give the alkali metal salt of the phenol compound, and b) distilling away the generated alcohol from the reaction simultaneously with carrying out step a). The method of the present invention makes it possible to produce hydroxybenzoic acid compound in high yield without using aprotic polar organic solvent.

    Disclosed are lubricating oil compositions comprising a lubricating base oil, (A) a specific alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salicylate and/or an overbased or basic salt thereof in an amount of 0.005 to 5 percent by mass in terms of metal and (B) a phosphorus-containing anti-wear agent in an amount of 0.005 to 0.2 percent by mass in terms of phosphorus and containing sulfur in an amount of 0.3 percent by mass or less, based on the total mass of the composition, the salicylate being any of salicylates fulfilling specific requirements. The lubricating oil compositions are low sulfur lubricating oils which are extremely excellent in anti-wear properties and long drain properties and suitable for an internal combustion engine.

    The present invention provides a method for producing a hydroxybenzoic acid compound comprising, dehydrating a phenol compound and an alkaline metal compound to form the alkaline metal salt of the phenol compound and reacting the alkaline metal salt and carbon dioxide, wherein the dehydrating step is conducted by reacting the alkaline metal compound with an excess amount of the phenol compound at a temperature of 160°C or above. According to the method of the present invention, the hydroxybenzoic acid compound can be obtained by simple steps with low cost without using an expensive aprotic polar organic solvent. The provided method can produce highly pure hydroxybenzoic acid compound comprising little by-products in high yield.

    The invention provides lubricant compositions for diesel engines having a regenerative DPF, which prolong life of the DPF by inhibiting accumulation of components depositable on DPF inner walls, diesel engine systems having a regenerative DPF with prolonged life, and a method for inhibiting accumulation of components depositing on the DPF in the system. The present composition is for diesel engines having a regenerative DPF and running on diesel fuel with < 10 mass ppm sulfur, contains a base oil and additives including (A) metal detergent, (B) ashless dispersant, and (C) phosphorus-based anti-wear agent, and satisfies the conditions of a sulfated ash content of 0.4-2 mass%, an atomic ratio of metal from component (A) to the total phosphorus of 0.2-3, an atomic ratio of the total boron to metal from component (A) of 0.2-2, and an atomic ratio of the total sulfur to metal from component (A) of 0-4.
