A Pd-catalyzed relatively general Michaelis–Arbuzov reaction of triaryl phosphites and aryliodides for preparing useful aryl phosphonates was developed. Interestingly, water can greatly facilitate the reaction through a water-participating phosphonium intermediate rearrangement process, which also makes the reaction conditions rather mild.
