  The Ph3P/Sc(OTf)(3) combination was found to be effective for the Reformatsky reaction; when alpha-bromo carboxylic acid derivatives were allowed to react with aldehydes in the presence of the Ph3P/Sc(OTf)(3) combination, the corresponding beta-hydroxy carboxylic acid derivatives were obtained in good yields with excellent diastereoselectivity.   This work describes the vinylation of α-halo carbonyl compounds with vinyl bromides under Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling conditions. While aryl-conjugated vinyl bromides entail pyridine as the sole labile ligand, the alkyl-substituted vinyl bromides require both bipyridine and pyridine as the co-ligands.

  i-Pr2NEt as the reducing agent, N-aryl α-azido tertiary amides were first converted to the corresponding aminyl radicals through reduction of the azido group; the aminyl radicals then underwent N-to-N aryl migration to give α-anilinyl-functionalized amides. α-Azido secondary amides, on the other hand, reacted with the solvent ethanol and i-Pr2NEt to afford the imidazolinone products.

  We present α-chloro amides as a new class of α-acetyl radical precursors, which undergo a tin-free, photoredox-catalysed intermolecular α-alkylation with various olefins exclusively in an anti-Markovnikov fashion. The reaction represents a reductive atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) and provides a series of alkylated amides in good yields.
