Simpleopticallyactive selenoxides (5-11 %e.e.) were prepared using a kinetic resolution procedure and were demonstrated to be configurationally unstable as a result of acid catalyzed achiral hydrate formation.

An effective synthesis of selenoxides by the oxidation of selenides with t-butyl hypochlorite in the presence of methanol and pyridine followed by hydrolysis is descrived. This oxidation method is particularly effective for the oxidation of selenides which possess electron-withdrawing groups. A synthesis of partially optically active selenoxide with bulky substituents can be achieved using a novel oxidation method.
Opticallyactive alkyl aryl selenoxides were synthesized by the asymmetricoxidation of corresponding selenides under Sharpless oxidation conditions. The absolute configurations of the opticallyactive alkyl aryl selenoxides prepared were estimated by comparisons of their circular dichroism spectra with those of the opticallyactivesulfoxides.
