2-a;1′,2′-d]pyrazine (1) when heated with 6% aqueous potassium hydroxide. Upon being heated at 160 °C the colourless dipyrrolopyrazine is converted into a red bis-(1-azafulvene) system, which can be reconverted photochromically into the dipyrrolopyrazine via a [6π+ 6π] cycloaddition reaction.

Kinetics of the Condensation of Dipyrrylmethenes with an α-Free Pyrrole<sup>1</sup>
A new, highly fluorescent (φF up to 0.85) rigid anti-Z-dipyrrinone chromophore has been synthesized in high yield in a one-pot reaction by condensing two monopyrroles in the presence of DBU to form the pyrrolo[3,2-f]indolizine-4,6-dione nucleus.
