    A highly selective ‘off–on’ fluorescence chemosensor for Cr(III)

    An 'off-on' fluorescence chemosensor for the selective signalling of Cr(III) has been designed exploiting the guest-induced inhibition of the photoinduced electron transfer signalling mechanism. The system shows an approximately 17-fold Cr(III)-selective chelation-enhanced fluorescence response in tetrahydrofuran and the system is highly selective against the background of environmentally and biologically relevant metal ions.     A new series of N2-substituted-5-(p-toluenesulfonylamino)phthalimide analogues as α-glucosidase inhibitors

    Several members of a new family of non-sugar-type alpha-glycosidase inhibitors, bearing a 5-(p-toluenesulfonylamino)phthalimide moiety and various substituent at the N2 position, were synthesized and their activities were investigated. The newly synthesized compounds displayed different inhibition profile towards yeast alpha-glycosidase and rat intestinal alpha-glycosidase. Almost all the compounds had strong inhibitory activities against yeast alpha-glycosidase. Regarding rat intestinal alpha-glycosidase, only analogs with N2-aromatic substituents displayed varying degrees of inhibitory activities on rat intestinal maltase and lactase and nearly all compounds showed no inhibition against rat intestinal alpha-amylase. Structure-activity relationship studies indicated that 5-(p-toluenesulfonylamino)phthalimide moiety is a favorable scaffold to exert the alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity and substituents at the N2 position have considerable influence on the efficacy of the inhibition activities.     The fluorescence response of two fluorophore–spacer–receptor systems, 1 and 2, wherein a 4-aminophthalimido moiety is linked to a monoaza- and a tetraazacrown macrocycle via a dimethylene spacer, has been explored in the absence and in the presence of various transition and post transition metal ions. Unlike the parent fluorophore, these systems are weakly fluorescent because of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the terminal moieties of the molecules. Of the two systems, PET is found to be more efficient in 2, which contains the tetraazacrown moiety as the receptor. Both systems display complex fluorescence decay behaviour with the average fluorescence lifetime much shorter than that of the parent fluorophore. The systems exhibit fluorescence enhancement in the presence of the metal ions, some of which are notorious quenchers of fluorescence. While the fluorescence output of 1 is rather similar with different metal ions, 2 exhibits high fluorescence enhancement with metal ions such as Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Hg2+ and Mn2+ while producing negligible enhancement with the remaining metal ions studied. This specific signaling behaviour of 2 has been rationalized taking into consideration somewhat unusual binding ability of the tetraazacrown receptor moiety.
