Electron-rich aromatic compounds are trifluoromethylated with sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate and t-butyl hydroperoxide. Monotrifluoromethylation predominates in the presence of catalytic amounts of Cu(II) triflate whereas mono- and bis-trifluoromethylated aromatics are obtained in almost equal quantities in the absence of Cu(II).
