An unusual aromatic substitution to access indolenines is described. 2-(2-Methoxyphenyl)acetonitrile derivatives are reacted with various alkyl and aryl Li reagents to furnish the corresponding indolenine products, constituents of natural products, and cyanine dyes such as indocyanine green.
