A 2-substituted-thiazolldine-4-carboxylic acid is produced in a high yield by holding 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid and a carbonyl compound of the formula:
wherein R, and R2 are identical or different and each represents a hydrogen atom, a formyl group, a carboxyl group, a substituted or unsubstituted saturated or unsaturated alkyl group, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group,
in aqueous solution in the presence of an effective amount of an enzyme of a microorganism, said enzyme being capable of converting 2-amino-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid to L-cysteine, and said microorganism being capable of growing in a medium containing 2-amino-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid as a nitrogen source and producing said enzyme.
