Thermalrearrangement of (S)- or (R)-hexahydro-1-nitroso-3-phthalimido-2H-azepin-2-one to the corresponding lactone followed by nucleophilic ring opening of the latter gives ε-chloro- or ε-hydroxynorleucine.
