Spiroxazines of formula (I)
wherein
R1 and R2 are the same or different and each is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or R1 and R2 together with the carbon to which both R1 and R2 are bonded form a cycloalkyl ring, a bicycloalkyl ring or a tricycloalkyl ring ;
R3 is alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 14 carbon atoms, cyanoalkyl wherein the alkyl group has 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or alkoxycarbonylalkyl wherein the alkoxy group has 1 to 10 carbon atoms and the alkylene group has 1 to 10 carbon atoms;
R4 and R5 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 14 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, cyano, halogenoalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, amino,mono- or di-subsfituted amino, cyclic amino, alkoxycarbonyl wherein the alkoxy group has 1 to 5 carbon atoms, or a monocyclic heterocydyl group having 5 or 6 ring atoms including one ring nitrogen ;
is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group or a substituted or unsubstituted unsaturated heterocyclic group wherein each substituent is selected from halogen, hydroxyl, cyano, nitro, alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, aryl of 6 to 10 carbon atoms, alkylamino of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, dialkylamino having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in each alkyl group, halogenoalkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, monocyclic heterocyclic group having 5 or 6 ring atoms, aralkyl of 7 to 14 carbon atoms and alkoxycarbonyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms, and
is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group or a substituted or unsubstituted unsaturated heterocyclic group wherein each substituent is selected from halogen, cyano, nitro, alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, amino or dialkylamino having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in each alkyl group provided that, when R1 and R2 are both methyl,
is a substituted or unsubstituted fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon group are photochromic and may be used in photochromic lenses.
