A new, transition-metal-free, effective method for aromatic esterification of amides with organoboronic acids has been developed, leading to a wide range of benzoate derivatives with yields ranging from moderate to good. The catalytic reaction shows broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance.

NHC−iron complexes prepared in situ very efficiently afforded benzoates via the aerobicoxidative aromatic esterification of aldehydes with boronic acids. This method uses equimolar amounts of both the aldehyde and the boronic acid allowing the preparation of benzoates in yields up to 97%.

Phenolic esters are efficiently converted to 2-substituted benzothiazoles in a one-pot reaction by treatment with 2-aminothiophenol in the presence of a catalytic amount of K2CO3 in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) at 100 °C.
