A process for preparing an ester of formula (I): R3CH2- (CR1R2)n-CH2-O-CO-(CR1R2)n-CH2R3 (I) wherein n is 1-3 and R1 and R2 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom or a carbon-linked organic group and R3 is a carbon-linked organic group, by hydrogenation of a reactant selected from: (a) a lactone of formula (II) wherein n is 1-3 and R1 and R2 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom or a carbon-linked organic group and R3 is a carbon-linked organic group; (b) an ester of a carboxylic acid of formula (III) R4-O-CO- (CR1R2)n-CO-R3 (III) wherein n is 1-3 and R1 and R2 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom or a carbon-linked organic group and R3 and R4 are a carbon-linked organic group; and c) a carboxylic acid of formula (IV) H-O-CO- (CR1R2)n-CO-R3 (IV) wherein n is 1-3 and R1 and R2 are each, independently, a hydrogen atom or a carbon-linked organic group and R3 is a carbon-linked organic group; which process involves contacting the reactant with a heterogeneous catalyst comprising a hydrogenating metal in the presence of hydrogen, wherein the catalyst is a zeolite-free heterogeneous catalyst comprising a hydrogenating metal supported on a metal oxide or a mixed oxide.

Slow release pesticidal composition comprising an intimate admixture of (a) a solid polymeric macromolecular substance, (b) a contact-pesticide having arthropodicidal action, and (c) a component acting as a carrier for the contact-pesticide, which component is incompatible with the solid polymeric marcomolecular substance.
An animal collar is provided comprising an elongate flexible strap (2) preferably of plastics material which may contain an ectoparasiticide. At one end of the strap fastening means (4) are provided having a passageway (10) with spaced apart opposing walls (12, 14) extending parallel to the strap through which the other end of the strap may be passed to form a loop. The passageway is provided with a hole (16) in its wall in which one of a number of projections (8) on the strap may be located to secure the loop. The strap is further provided with an extendable portion (70) which by means of frangible elements holding the ends of the slits in the strap together enables the strap to be lengthened increasing the loop size but maintaining an integral loop when a predetermined choking tension is applied to the loop breaking some of the frangible elements.
At least some of the bristles or teeth of a brush or comb are made of a polymeric material comprising a pesticide which can bloom to the surface of the material. A dog or other animal can thereby be treated against ectoparasites at the same time as being groomed. Pesticides which might react adversely with one another may be separated in different bristles. Suitable pesticides include pyrethroids and organophosphates. Suitable polymeric materials include PVC.

Annoying insects are controlled by attaching an insect control device to the body of the animal to be treated. The insect control device is a molded article, preferably in the form of an ear tag, which has been formed from a mixture of fenthion and polyvinyl chloride. In a preferred embodiment, the fenthion is used in combination with coumaphos. The fenthion is generally used in an amount such that it represents from about 5 to about 30 wt% of the insect control device. When used in combination with coumaphos, the fenthion is generally present in an amount of from about 5 to about 30 wt% and coumaphos is generally used in an amount such that from about 5 to about 30 wt% of the device is coumaphos. A plasticizer is not required to make the insect control device of the present invention but such plasticizer may optionally be used. Other materials such as lubricants, pigments, stabilizers, etc. may also be included in minor amounts. The device may be formed by any appropriate technique but injection molding has been found to be particularly advantageous.
