    Design, synthesis and characterization of a linear hydrogen bonded homologous series
    摘要:
    A linear hydrogen bonded liquid crystalline homologous series has been synthesized and characterized. Hydrogen bond is formed between p-n-dodecyloxy benzoic acid and various p-n-alkyl benzoic acids whose alkyl chain vary from octyl to ethyl. Synthesized complexes are characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR studies for inferring the formation of hydrogen bonds. Polarizing Optical Microscopy (POM) and DSC studies reveal various mesophases and their corresponding transition temperatures along with respective enthalpy values. All the seven synthesized complexes exhibit rich liquid crystalline mesomorphism. A new phase namely smectic X has been observed in five of the complexes with a narrow thermal range. This phase has been characterized by optical textural, DSC, tilt angle and helicoidal pitch studies. Smectic X is sandwiched between traditional smectic C and re-entrant smectic C (designated as C-R) phases. Homeotropic transition in nematic phase is observed in all the mesogens and thus these materials can be used as thermally controlled optical shutters. Tilt angle in smectic C, smectic X and smectic C-R phases have been experimentally elucidated for all the mesogens. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    (EN) This invention provides a fuel oil composition comprising a major amount of a fuel oil and a minor amount of an additive comprising at least one fuel oil-soluble alkyl or alkoxy aromatic compound wherein at least one group independently selected from alkyl and alkoxy groups of 1 to 30 carbon atoms is attached to an aromatic nucleus and at least one carboxyl group and optionally one or two hydroxyl groups are attached to the aromatic nucleus; a process for the preparation of such a fuel oil composition; and the use of such a fuel oil composition as fuel in a compression-ignition engine for controlling wear rate in the fuel injection system thereof.(FR) L'invention concerne une composition de mazout comprenant une quantité importante d'un mazout et une quantité moindre d'un additif comportant au moins un alkyle soluble dans le mazout ou un composé aromatique d'alkoxy. Dans cette composition, au moins un groupe indépendamment sélectionné parmi des groupes alkyle et alkoxy, de 1 à 30 atomes de carbone, est fixé à un noyau aromatique et au moins un groupe carboxyle et éventuellement un ou deux groupes hydroxyle sont fixés au noyau aromatique. L'invention traite aussi d'un procédé pour la préparation d'une composition de mazout de ce type, et de l'utilisation de cette composition comme combustible dans un moteur Diesel pour contrôler le taux d'usure dans le système d'injection de combustible.
