(Eta-5-2,4-Dimethylpentadienyl)Cr(PMe3)2Cl (prepared from Cr(PMe3)2Cl2 and K-2,4-Me2C5H5) reacts with allylmagnesium chloride to give initially (eta-3-2,4-Me2C5H5)(eta-3-C3H5)Cr(PMe3)2, which above -30-degrees-C undergoes phosphine elimination to give (eta-5-2,4-Me2C5H5)(eta-3-C2H5)CrPMe3, the structure of which has been determined by X-ray diffraction. In contrast, systems containing either the bidentate ligand bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane or the cyclopentadienyl ligand react with allylmagnesium chloride to give the diamagnetic compounds (eta-5-2,4-Me2C5H5)(eta-3-C3H5)Cr(Me2PC2H4PMe2) and Cp(eta-3-C3H5)Cr(PMe3)2.
