  Elephantopus carolinianus yielded two cytotoxic sesquiterpene lactones, deoxyelephantopin and isodeoxyelephantopin, as well as 11β,13-dihydrodeoxyelephantopin which is devoid of cytotoxicity. The structures and stereochemistries of isodeoxyelephantopin and 11β,13-dihydrodeoxyelephantopin were determined by spectroscopic analysis, chemical transformations and X-ray analysis.
