    A resin-coated, knitted glass fibre substrate is prevented from fraying at a cut end by the presence at the said cut end of a polymer strip. The substrate is preferably coated with a water curable resin whereby the coated substrate can be used as an orthopaedic bandage. Processes for applying the polymer strip to the resin-coated substrate are also described.

    Compounds of the formula (I):     R¹-(OCH₂CH₂)n-O-CO-(NH)m-R²      (I) are provided wherein R¹ is an alkyl group of 1 to 14 carbon atoms, a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted by an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms substituted by a phenyl group; R² is an alkyl group of 1 to 14 carbon atoms, a phenyl group, a phenyl group substituted by an alkyl group of 1 to 12 carbon atoms or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms substituted by a phenyl group; n is 6 to 100; and m is 0 or 1. Such compounds and those of the formula     R¹-X-(OCH₂CH₂)n-O-CO-(NH)m-R² wherein R¹, R², m and n are as defined above and X is a bond or (NH)m-CO-group may be dissolved in an amount of from 1 to 10% by weight in an isocyanate resin to form a water curable composition suitable as low tack orthopaedic splinting material when coated onto a suitable substrate.

    A knitted substrate suitable for use in a resin-coated, water-hardenable orthopaedic splinting bandage is described. The substrate comprises inelastic fibres being incorporated in the substrate in the length direction. In a preferred substrate the low modulus fibre is a multifilament polypropylene and the elastic fibre is a polyurethane yarn. Conformable orthopaedic bandages employing the substrate are also described.

    The invention provides a photocurable resin composition which inhibits the deactivation of a bisacylphosphine oxide-series photopolymerization initiator and is useful for coating optical fibers. The photocurable resin composition comprises (A) a polyurethane (meth)acrylate oligomer, (B) an ethylenically unsaturated compound, (C) a bisacylphosphine oxide-series photopolymerization initiator, and (D) a tertiary amine and no tin component. Incorporation of the component (D) inhibits the decomposition and deactivation of the component (C). The component (A) may contain an aliphatic C14-40 polyol (hydrogenated dimerdiol, 12-hydroxystearyl alcohol) as a polyol component. This resin composition is used for a primary coating of a glass fiber or an indirect coating of an optical fiber through the primary layer, the coating layer being cured by light irradiation to provide an optical fiber coated with the resin composition.
