    Friedel–Crafts alkylation proceeded by catalysis of tetrakis[3,5-di(F-methyl)phenyl]borate (TFPB) in a dichloromethane-aqueous sulfuric acid two-phase system. Kinetic evidence indicated that oxonium-TFPB ion-pair in the organic phase was operative as a catalyst.

    Disclosed herein are highly stable styrenated phenolic compositions that are liquids at room temperature, and polymer articles and lubricant compositions containing such styrenated phenolic compositions. Also disclosed are processes for forming such styrenated phenolic compositions, which processes afford distyrenated phenolics assaying at 70% minimum by total GC area, comprising reacting styrene with one or more phenolics, e.g., at least one of phenol, p-cresol and/or o-cresol, in the presence of an acid catalyst, preferably a sulfonic acid catalyst, at elevated temperature, wherein the resulting product mixture comprises one or more monostyrenated phenolics, one or more distyrenated phenolics, and one or more tristyrenated phenolics.

    The invention provides a selective process for preparing a 2,4- or 3,6-di-substituted phenol compound which comprises reacting an olefin compound of the formula: wherein R¹ is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, halogen substituted-alkyl, aryl, halogen substituted-aryl or alkyl substituted-aryl; and R², R³ and R⁴ are the same or different and each is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, halogen substituted-alkyl or aralkyl; with a phenol compound of the formula: wherein R⁵ is hydrogen, hydroxy, halogen, alkyl, halogen substituted-alkyl, alkoxy or -C(R⁶)(R⁷)CH(R⁸)(R⁹) (wherein R⁶ is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, halogen substituted-alkyl, aryl, halogen substituted-aryl or alkyl substituted-aryl; and R⁷, R⁸ and R⁹ are the same or different and each is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, halogen substituted-alkyl or aralkyl), in the presence of a phosphorus compound and a carboxylic acid compound as catalysts.
