The first, direct meso-hydroxymethylation of 5,15-substituted porphyrins can effectively be obtained by a simple one-pot procedure involving a sequential SNAr reaction of porphyrins with (2-pyridyidimethylsilyl)methyl lithium, followed by hydrolysis and aerobic oxidation at ambient 02 pressure.
